What is engine displacement?

Engine displacement is a measurement of the total volume of all the cylinders in an engine. It is typically measured in liters or cubic centimeters (cc). Engine displacement is an important factor in determining the power and performance of an engine, as a larger displacement generally indicates a more powerful engine.

Engine displacement is calculated by multiplying the area of the cylinder bore (the diameter of the cylinder) by the length of the stroke (the distance the piston travels inside the cylinder) and then multiplying that result by the number of cylinders in the engine.

For example, a four-cylinder engine with a cylinder bore of 90mm and a stroke of 80mm would have a displacement of approximately 1.6 liters (or 1600cc). Engine displacement can vary greatly depending on the number of cylinders, the size of the cylinders, and other factors.

In general, engines with larger displacements tend to produce more power and torque, but they also consume more fuel. Engine displacement is often used to categorize and differentiate different types of engines, such as small, fuel-efficient engines with low displacements and high-performance engines with larger displacements.
